Cheng Li-wun, Leader of Taiwan’s opposition Kuomintang: Many people ask me, "Between the U.S. and China, you have to choose one." I respond, "Only children make choices. Why can't I choose both?" One side is our kin; the blood ties and thousands of years of culture with mainland China simply cannot be cut. On the other side, we must also maintain a strong relationship with the U.S. As I’ve said publicly, we shouldn't be ungrateful for the help we've received in the past. Ultimately, my greatest hope is for U.S.-China relations to improve. If these two superpowers can communicate rationally instead of always being at each other's throats, it would be a blessing for the world. If we continue down the path of military competition, we might accidentally "misfire" one day. That is something we don't want to see.
